7 Countries Where Int’l Students Need Less Than $10K as Financial Proof to Get Visas

When applying for a student visa, international students are usually asked to submit evidence of sufficient funds in their bank accounts, to have their visas approved.

Governments require students to meet financial requirements, which vary depending on the country, to ensure students can support themselves for a specific period, Erudera.com reports.

Some countries, especially those attracting high numbers of international students, require students to have access to over $10,000 to be eligible for a study visa. In some cases, like the United States, the visa fund requirement is up to $70,000 (€65,093) for the first year of a program.

Nonetheless, there are also countries where international students are eligible for a visa even if they have less than $10,000 in available funds, such as Czechia, where students need only $1,612 (€1,500) in financial resources.

The following list shows seven countries where students must submit proof of funds but in modest amounts.

The Czech Republic

To apply for a long-term visa or a residence permit in the Czech Republic, applicants, including students, must demonstrate they have enough money for their stay in the country.

To meet the requirement for a student visa, international students need to show proof of funds ($1,500 or €1,488 per year) or a confirmation that their university will cover the costs.

“Students can also submit a stipend or grant gained on the basis of international agreement by which the Czech Republic is bound. If these finances will not cover the entire required sum, students prove that they have financial means to cover the difference,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Czechia states on its website.

According to data from the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), a total of 55,493 international students were studying in the country last year.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, about 15,000 students chose Czechia as their destination for exchange studies or short-term programs.

China

To be able to study in China, international students must provide financial evidence, showing they have access to $2,500 (€2,300) in funds.

Data from the Chinese Ministry of Education indicate the number of new international students in China increased to 172,571 during 2019. But, it dropped to 89,750 in 2020 and jumped again to 114,112 in 2022.

The same reveals that the top three Chinese universities that attract the most international students are Beijing Language and Culture University (9,056 students), the University of International Business and Economics (8,555 students), and Peking University (7,793 students).

Earlier last year, a group of Chinese experts recommended increasing tuition fees so China can compete with the top two countries to study abroad - the United States and the United Kingdom.

Italy

As of 2023, those who want to study in Italy must show they have access to $5,931 (€5,520) for one year to be eligible for an Italian student visa.

“To obtain a student visa in Italy, you must show proof that you have a minimum of €460.28 per month (as of 2023) during your stay in the country with a student visa. You can show proof of financial means by submitting bank statements, a sponsor letter, or evidence that another third party is financing you to study in Italy,” a report by VisaGuide.World points out.

Singapore

Singapore also requires students to have less than $10,000 in available funds.

International students need to show a proof of $6,175 (€5,745) to support their stay in Singapore. About 55,000 international students from around the world choose Singapore as their study destination.

Finland

Students who plan to study in Finland must have access to $7,560 (€7,034) when applying for their student visa. Statistics Finland shows that Finnish higher education institutions enroll over 22,000 international students.

Spain

Spain is also among the countries that has set a lower financial requirement for international students. According to reports, to be eligible for a Spanish student visa, international students must have $7,680 (€7,200) in their bank account for one year of stay.

According to data from Spain’s Ministerio de Universidades (Ministry of Universities), a record 224,080 international students attended Spanish higher education institutions in the 2021/22 academic year.

Of this figure, 170,222 students enrolled in a degree program, while the remaining 53,858 were on shorter-term academic exchanges. Most international students in Spain hail from Italy, France, Germany, and Romania.

France

The bank balance requirement for a French student visa is $7,930 (€7,380) in one year.

“Graduate and undergraduate students must show proof of one full year of funding. Therefore, you are required to show proof of one full year of tuition fee plus a living cost €615 per month for one full year,” Campus France states.

France was home to 412,087 international university students in the 2022/23 academic year, a 17 percent increase in five years. The main source countries of international students in France are
